Reader Interview
Starting off with Spencer.
Welcome to my new series, where I interview readers I know to get some opinions on here aside from my own. I’ll try to do these once a quarter and please let me know if you’re interested in participating! My very first reader interview is with Spencer. Who is also my boyfriend, and who I got to start reading fiction a few years ago when we first met. He was always a big reader, but preferred non-fiction until I showed up and had him read both The Secret History and The Shards, pretty much immediately upon meeting. Now he’s a fiction king.
Reader Profile:
Name - Spencer.
Occupation - Software developer.
Where you grew up - Washington/Idaho.
Where you live now - Idaho.
Hobbies other than reading - trying new restaurants and coffee shops, watching soccer, watching movies, build apps, and hang with my corgi Winston.
Questions:
When did you first get into reading? Middle school. I was into Harry Potter and making my way through the series. I used to go to the midnight book releases.
What are you reading right now? The Count of Monte Cristo. I started it in November and is taking me some time. Don Quixote is next.
Best book you read in 2025? I can’t just give one. North Woods and Stoner.
Top 5 all time favs?
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (+ The Hobbit)
What is a book you recommend everyone? Dune. That’s what I recommended at guy’s night. It’s like Star Wars but cooler.
What is a book you love but never recommend? The Twilight Series. I thought the series was better than the movies. The execution is different.
What is the biggest letdown book you’ve read last year? EASY! Dune Messiah. Dune was one of the greatest books ever written, and Dune Messiah is one of the worst books I’ve ever read in my entire life.
What book was the biggest surprise you read last year? Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I thought it was going to be unreadable as some classics tend to be, but I liked it and thought it was a fun story. I totally get why it's an American Classic.
What is your most controversial book take? The first half of James was amazing but the second half was just okay.
Before the opinion speed round, leave the audience with an underrated book: Kitchen Confidential.
Opinion speed round:
Paperback or hardcover? Paperback.
Audiobook or physical book? Physical.
Library loan or own? Own (Author’s note: I am working on getting him to change this…).
Read in a coffeeshop or a park? Would rather read at home, but I guess park.
Sad ending or happy ending? Happy ending.
Romance or thriller? Thriller.
Kindle or physical book? Physical.
Series or standalone? Standalone.
Long book or short book? Short book.
Thanks Spencer! I like getting to switch things up and highlight someone else’s bookish thoughts. Let me know if you find this interesting or not, and I am also looking for people to participate, so let me know if you’re one of them.
Happy Reading!
